The work of assistant professor Mark Donofrio involves the pursuit of workflows and processes that foster collaborative relationships between architecture and structural engineering through the use of digital design media. His research includes the continued development of a digital design workflow that seeks to actively link the geometry platforms being utilized by architects with tools for structural analysis, design, form-finding, and optimization. This workflow leads to an accelerated generation and transfer of information to help guide and inform the design process. The engineering team is thus empowered to augment the architect’s design by ensuring that the design team is conscious of the structural implications of design decisions throughout the entire design process.

Prior to joining the University of Oregon, Donofrio served as a structural engineer for Halvorson and Partners and Skidmore, Owings and Merrill both in Chicago. While at Halvorson and Partners, he was responsible for development of parametric workflows on projects including 1 Dubai, which consisted of three ultra-tall towers linked together with sky bridges, as well as various international competitions. At SOM, he assisted in the development and management of the structural digital workflow for SOM’s design for the Lotte Super Tower in Seoul, Korea.
