New students must be advised before they can register (see NEW STUDENTS below).
All returning students (see RETURNING STUDENTS below) are responsible for meeting with their adviser at least once a year (spring term).
RESOURCES
UNIVERSITY OF OREGON CATALOG: The University of Oregon Catalog lists the General University Requirements.
ADVISING HANDBOOK: The Advising Handbook, published by the Department of Architecture each fall, is for all new students and contains a complete description of Policies and Procedures as well as information about programs, scholarships, faculty and history of the department. Students are given this publication to keep during their tenure in the Department.
DUCKWEB: Go to Duckweb to see your current transcript.
DEGREE CHECK: Degree Check is unavailable at the current time. For more information, please email Kathy Cannon at cannon@uoregon.edu .
NEW STUDENTS
Prior undergraduate or graduate students initial enrollment in the Department of Architecture they must attend one of the departmental advising sessions. Upon enrollment a permanent faculty advisor is assigned to each student. Each is free to change advisors.
Most new undergraduate students are advised in the preceding spring and summer. The University’s Office of Student Services organizes the IntroDUCKtion activities. The IntoDUCKtion activities include an over-night stay in a dorm (parents included), a tour of campus, and information sessions for parents and students. Students are advised and then register for their classes. Faculty members are assigned advisees and participate, voluntarily, in the morning coffees and afternoon receptions for parents. The department is an active participant in IntroDUCKtion and appreciates the excellent program developed by the Office of Student Services.
For new students who miss the spring and summer advising sessions and returning students, new student advising is scheduled during the Week of Welcome in the fall. Advising of our students is a high priority in the department.
LEARNING COMMUNITIES - FIRST YEAR PROGRAMS: The Department of Architecture participates in the Freshman Interest Group (FIG) program. This excellent freshman program is open to majors and non-majors. It is a program that provides advising, mentoring and the opportunity to participate in a seminar led by a faculty member from the Department of Architecture. See the University of Oregon Catalog for more information.
Monet’s Garden Pathway is for non-majors who wish to continue the FIG experience winter and spring terms. The pathway courses are designed for those interested in exploring the design disciplines. See the University of Oregon Catalog for more information.
ROBERT D. CLARK HONORS COLLEGE: The Department of Architecture always has a number of students in the Robert Donald Clark Honors College. This is a small Liberal Arts College within the University. The purpose of the college is to bring together excellent students and selected faculty in a collegial environment. Students often combine the subject of the Honors Thesis with the Terminal Studio Project.
MINOR STUDIES: It is common for undergraduate students to work toward a minor. The most popular minors are business, art history, interior architecture (for architecture majors), geography and languages. Students interested in working in other cultures should consider keeping a second language current. The most popular are Spanish, German, French, Italian, Japanese and Chinese.
RETURNING STUDENTS
Students are responsible for seeking out advice from their advisor and are expected to meet with their advisor at least once each year. Prior to fall term registration (mid-May), students are encouraged to meet with their advisor to plan a schedule of courses for the following academic year. During the term and at the term-end interviews, students should consider their studio instructor as an informal advisor.
